WHAT IS WHALE?

Whale is a generative music and art project about the sea.

Music is generated from a buoy located in the Mediterranean Sea and a unique graphic image is created during the course of the day. This image represents ongoing sea conditions.

FAQS

HOW DOES IT WORK?

A buoy sends real-time data about the sea’s motion. Music and graphic art are generated with the data at the Chiringuito (beach bar).

Whale is a system created by the interaction of the following elements:

Buoy:
The buoy is located in the sea and is equipped with a Smart Citizen motherboard and an accelerometer that emits real-time data about sea motion through a Wi-Fi connection.

Router:
The router captures the buoy’s signal and transmits it to a CPU located in the Espigó Platja Beach Bar on the beach at Sant Andreu de Llavaneras.

CPU:
The CPU processes the information through an application developed at Processing and produces live music at the bar.

At the same time, another program using the same information generates a real-time image, which is a unique visual representation of the sea conditions that day.

Internet:
When the system is operating, an XML file with the buoy information is updated on Internet in real-time. Furthermore, the image that has been generated is automatically displayed and can be seen by everyone.

HOW IS THE MUSIC GENERATED?

The music is produced by the information on sea conditions relayed by a buoy equipped with a Smart Citizen motherboard.

An application created at Processing is activated, deactivated and transformed into a series of Boss Nova Jazz type music tracks. These make an infinite melody that is a musical representation of sea conditions.

HOW IS THE MUSIC?

Here's a sample MP3 of the music in the installation. Keep in mind that the music is always different and never sounds the same.

You can also download a MP3 sample to listen anywhere.

WHAT ARE SMART CITIZEN MOTHERBOARDS?

Smart Citizen is a platform based on open-source software and hardware for the public's involvement in a city's output.

Smart Citizen Motherboards are designed to be used as environmental sensors located in balconies around a city.

They are solar powered and connected through Wi-Fi to an online platform where all the data is displayed.

Data transmission and production in Whale's buoy is made possible through a Smart Citizen motherboard equipped with an accelerometer.

WHERE IS THE BUOY LOCATED?

The buoy is located in the Mediterranean Sea by the esplanade of Sant Andreu de Llavaneras in the province of Barcelona about 50 meters from the Chiringuito Espigó Platja.

WHO CREATED THIS PROJECT?

The project's architects are Gonzalo Zaragoza, creative technologist, and Anastasio Fonolla, owner of the Chiringuito Espigó.

The electronics were developed in Hangar Interaction Lab with M.A. de Heras and Alex Posada, MID's project manager and one of the pioneers of the Smart Citizen project. Alex has also played a very important role in the creative process.

The project would not have been possible without the generous participation of: Ricardo Gala and Jonathan Gonzalez from Bittenbit. They created the accelerometer simulator and carried out invaluable consulting work throughout the project.

Juan Zaragoza. Sailor by vocation and retired architect whose help with the mechanics of the buoy and logistics of the project has been vital.

HOW AND WHEN CAN I HEAR THE MUSIC?

For the time being, the music can only be heard at the Espigó Platja Beach Bar daily from 18:00 to 20:00, and occasionally throughout the day, depending on the circumstances. Activities are being prepared with the music in mind. For more information, click on www.espigoplatja.com/agenda.

Perhaps in the future, the music may be heard from anywhere via the Internet.

HOW CAN I SEE THE IMAGES WHALE GENERATES?

Every day a unique and unrepeatable graphic production is published, which represents the condition of the sea that day. You can see a gallery of images with each production here

VISUALIZATIONS

A unique graphic image is created every day from the real-time data of the Mediterranean Sea's motion.

These images are published immediately after they are generated and are unique visual representations of sea conditions.
